Main duties of the job

An opportunity has arisen for an Occupational Therapist with experience in assessment and treatment of patients with hand function issues to work as part of the Occupational therapy hand team which is based at Ysbyty Gwynedd. The successful candidate will specifically support the hand team. It is an established post that is well respected with an experienced assistant in post to support.

Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential, with the ability to work confidently in the assessment and treatment of patients within the clinical speciality. Recognising, respecting and being sensitive to individuals philosophies of life along with the significance of religious and cultural beliefs.

The ability to utilise existing computer software to update clinical notes, order equipment etc. is necessary as well as general computer literacy and assisting with data collection when required.

 The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The majority of the work is carried out at Ysbyty Gwynedd with clinics in local sites as needed. 

Patients are referred to the hand team from a variety of sources and conditions vary from elective surgery for conditions such as Dupuytrens’ or Osteoarthritis to post operative treatment of conditions following trauma such as tendon repair and fractures. 

The opportunity to learn specialist skills will be provided on the job by the senior therapists and competencies will be gained through taught learning, observation and study.

Once competencies are gained there will be an expectation for the post holder to maintain a clinical caseload and organise own priorities of intervention and appointments. The work will involve assessment and treatment of conditions as well as making bespoke thermoplastic splints as indicated from the assessments.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Degree or equivalent in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • Desirable criteria

  • Short courses at post graduate diploma level.
  • Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Significant post graduate experience with demonstrable experience in related clinical field
  • Experience of contributing to service development and implementing service changes.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Broad band 5 rotational experience
  • Experience in same specialist clinical area.

  • Evidence of working independently
  • Ability to implement the Occupational Therapy process
