Are you an enthusiastic and entrepreneurial leader? Can you lead and champion an exceptional experience for our visitors?

About us
The Science Museum Group is here to inspire futures. As part of this strategic priority, we are delivering a major masterplan development at the National Railway Museum (NRM) – Vision 2025. The benefits to our visitors will be a greatly improved visitor experience; easier level access across the site, galleries to interact and learn engineering skills, learn about the future of the railways; and new and improved café and retail spaces with high quality facilities.

Over the coming four years the museum will undergo unprecedented change; the museum is the cultural heart of a £1bn city centre regeneration project, York Central. Vision 2025 is a total reimagination of the museum; every part of the museum and visitor journey will change. Our redevelopment will contribute to the regions’ regeneration, the skills agenda and to the city’s wider cultural offer and profile.

To support this important and exciting work, we are now looking for a Head of Operations & Business Development to join the leadership team at NRM.

About the role
In this role, you will support the Museum Director and the Senior Leadership Team in ensuring a great visitor experience in a safe environment.

You will be a key operational leader, championing a positive culture and leading our front of house teams and volunteers to deliver exceptional visitors experiences during our planned development works and beyond, with a growing focus on managing the ever-changing museum for our colleagues and visitors.

About you
Joining us, you will bring operational experience in venue or site management in a customer or visitor-facing environment. You will have a track record in developing strategies for implementing complex operational changes within a venue, along with an ability to advocate for the visitor experience throughout periods of construction and disruption. You will be able to lead, inspire and develop a team with a positive, solutions-focused approach. We do not expect you to hold experience or knowledge of museums, but you will bring a passion for the museum, its programmes and greater mission.

What we offer
Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we offer up to 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; a support with personal and professional development; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; and enhanced support for things that happen in life such as parental and adoption leave, sickness and career breaks.

‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.

We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
