We are looking for a Manager Data Science to manage a data science team in Elsevier Research products and collaborate with Elsevier Product, Technology and Data teams to deliver measurable impact from new data products for our customers and to support decision making for the business.

You will lead, while being hands-on, on data science initiatives and mentor data scientists that are in earlier stages of their careers. In your role you will be accountable for understanding product strategy and requirements to develop algorithms and machine learning techniques and apply them to a wide variety of tasks such as NLP and recommender systems. You will drive the innovation and application of new techniques and methods as applicable, and continuously strive to improve our tools and data science practices. Though the role will be based in London or Amsterdam, you will be working with colleagues in locations in the US and rest of Europe.

Responsibilities
Develop strategic data science perspective; focus on business impact

  • Correctly frame the problems, data science solutions space, and the criteria for success to the business and our customers. Make sure your team delivers the right answers and solutions for the right questions.
  • Champion Data Science as a key enabler in achieving product goals, resulting in concrete data science enabled product features that deliver value.
  • Apply ‘human-centric’ data science. Understand your customers, what burning questions they are trying to answer, what goals they have, their pain points. Provide data science solutions to help them making faster and better actions and decisions.
  • Hold yourself and your team accountable for focussing on outcomes and making measurable impact.

Stakeholder management & communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to explain complex topics to stakeholders
  • Connect with peers in technology and product organisation to develop and share in depth business understanding and domain knowledge.

Team management & leading through change

  • Provide people management and develop a small data science team, ensuring motivation and recognition, and establish clear pathways for their growth.
  • Manage the performance of the team and the team members performance evaluations and provide constant and impactful feedback
  • As DS lead contribute, with your team, hands-on with identifying and preparing (gold) data sets, creating, and evaluating ML solutions, and working with technology and other data teams on productionisation of your and your team’s data science solutions.
  • Motivate your team and establish an environment that is safe, inclusive, diverse, and where people can be fully themselves.
  • Create and utilize novel data preparation and processing for analysis. Oversee others in the application and analysis.
  • Collaborate to establish project objectives, key results and data science activities and independently execute for the entire small-scale projects. Independently execute project steps for more complicated project management tasks.
  • Able to independently apply Machine Learning methods to build advanced models and roll into production. Able to build and validate new modelling methods and provide senior guidance.
  • Primary driver of your team’s Data Science projects and results. Lead code reviews, final approvals of models before reaching customer, set high- bar for model development

Skills, Qualifications & Domain expertise

  • Strong Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Applied Statistics, or related disciplines and 4+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience working on commercial data science projects that have been deployed in production.
  • Deep knowledge of Machine Learning, as well as coding proficiency using common libraries and frameworks.
  • Expert in relevant Data Science frameworks (e.g. Tensorflow, etc).
  • Strong experience with Python. Comfortable with other typical languages used in Data Science (e.g. SQL, Java, and/or Scala). Overseeing others in use of the code, provide code reviews.
  • Big Data/Cloud Environments: experience with Spark/pySpark/DataBricks and AWS
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to analyze complex problems and devise effective solutions
  • Apply human-in-the-loop by involving humans/SMEs for feedback/validations in early development/training to testing stages.
  • Become an expert on available domain data and sources and how the applied DS solutions you and your team create utilize this domain data to create in product/customer facing solutions.
  • Evaluate and create new frameworks and evolve methodologies/ governance.
