An exciting opportunity has risen for an experienced IT technician with a background in networking and communications, to join a growing IT department for a busy public sector organisation.

The Network and Communications Technician position is a hybrid role, 1-2 days will be spent in the main Trafford office and the remaining days you are free to work from home. The role also offers 25 days paid holiday (plus bank holidays) which moves up to 30 days after 5 years of service, 3x life insurance policy, as well as a pension scheme of 6.5% (3.25% matched).

The Role

Reporting to the Network, Security and Communications Manager, you will primarily be responsible for the support, maintenance and development of the ICT network, security and communications systems and infrastructure. In addition to this you will:

  • Provide a central contact point for all issues regarding networks, and network security.
  • Provide excellent customer service in all matters related to network, security, and communications to other staff both in the IT department and otherwise.
  • Facilitate the technical activities that enable effective communication and partnership between other public sector faculties.
  • Provide technical support remotely and on-site and to efficiently resolve issues according to SLA’s.
  • Provide useful consultation to other teams regarding network, security, and communications systems
  • Support of projects related to networks, communication, and security.
  • Assist in the research and development of technologies that are of benefit to the network and security infrastructure of the company.
  • Ideal Experience

  • 5 Years in a networking and communications environment and evidential knowledge of the following:
  • Networking technologies and principals, specifically Ethernet.
  • Network design.
  • Physical and logical topologies.
  • WAN and LAN technologies.
  • Structured cabling, copper, and fibre.
  • Radio and radio links.
  • VLAN’s and routing.
  • Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching (particularly Alcatel).
  • Wi-Fi (HPE Aruba preferred) standards and protocols.
  • Security technologies and services (Fortinet preferred.
  • Protocol analysers (Wireshark preferred).
  • Ideal Skills

  • Excellent communication skills via face to face, telephone, and email, with the ability to converse with a wide audience of varying IT knowledge.
  • Excellent system, software & hardware diagnostic skills, fault finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven team working skills, as well as working individually & managing own workload
  • An awareness of developing trends in networking technology.
  • Experience in interfacing with third party suppliers’ solutions providers.
