Main duties of the job

Undertake a range of specialist diagnostic imaging procedures within the modalities of CT and MRI including independent out of hours working.

To review radiological history, as required, in order to make recommendations on the most appropriate procedure for agreement by a consultant radiologist or other suitably entitled IRMER practitioner. In addition, where referrals meet specific locally agreed criteria, and the radiographer has the entitlement of CT Practitioner under IRMER, undertake procedure justification independently.

To contribute towards the delivery of a patient-focussed service of the highest quality and, under the management and delegated professional authority of the Principal/Service Lead Radiographer for CT/MR, be an expert point of reference for these modalities in respect of both service delivery and improvement.

To undertake and assist with a wide range of examinations across both modalities in the base hospital radiology department and, as required, in other departments within the Radiology Service, as appropriate to the level and scope of training this will include, for example, undertaking complex CT scans such as major and multi trauma, intensive care patients, paediatrics (including cases of physical abuse), subtraction angiography, cardiac gated procedures, spinal cord compressions and interventional drainage procedures as an independent worker on call or during normal core hours.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To perform high quality examinations, ensuring efficient delivery of workflow and compliance with the statutory regulations relating to ionising radiation, BCUHB and Radiology policies and procedures.

To undertake contractual hours, including on-call, over a seven day period, the pattern and duration of which will be compliant with the European Working Time Directive and BCUHB Rostering Guidelines. This will involve service provision out of hours when there is limited or no direct access to more senior staff, managerial and consultant support, and liaison with outsourced clinical services e.g. Radiology Reporting Online (RRO) during out of hours on-call.

To supervise and instruct relevant staff, students and visitors in the department and other working environments, ensuring compliance with BCUHB and Radiology specific policies, protocols and working practices.

To undertake general departmental work and/or imaging within other modalities as required, in line with scope of practice and training.
