An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join the integrated RCHT and CFT Infection Prevention and Control Team. The team provide a dynamic and forward thinking service to support safe patient pathways across their journey. Ideally candidates should have substantial experience as a healthcare support worker, with some involvement in the audit process.

The post holder must be able to demonstrate the ability to prioritise their own workload effectively, within agreed timescales and to build relationships and communicate effectively with a wide range of workforce groups. Candidates must also be competent with IT skills, in particular Excel, and Word.

This is a full-time post working 37.5 hours per week. Hours will be flexible according to the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a member of the Infection Prevention and Control Team, assisting in the provision of an Infection Control Service.

The post holder will assist in the development and preparation of audit tools

The post holder will take part in meetings to review infection control surveillance results and respond to requests for information and advice, referring to other team members appropriately.

He/she will work with Ward Staff to ensure high standards of environmental tidiness and cleanliness are maintained, carrying out audits and undertaking training as required.

The post holder will support the Mandatory Surgical Site Surveillance on behalf of the organisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Surveillance and Audit

To support the Infection Prevention and Control Team in the delivery of the ongoing Infection Prevention and Control audit programme.

To participate in the development and implementation of programmes of audit and surveillance.

To ensure accurate reporting and feedback to all clinical staff.

To provide support to healthcare workers in carrying out programmes of audit within clinical areas, demonstrating to staff appropriate techniques where necessary.

Provide support and advice to clinical staff in order to facilitate improving practice.

To regularly review databases and ensure they are kept up to date on a weekly basis as a minimum.

To participate in meetings with clinical teams to review infection surveillance and audit results.

To use the Patient Administration System (PAS) and other computer systems eg ICNet in accordance with Trust policy and procedure.

To support the Surgical Site Surveillance programme in the surveillance of surgical site infections as required.

Planning and Organisational Skills

Ability to organise and manage own workload effectively

Work with the IPAC team to implement the Trust ongoing Infection Prevention and Control audit programme.

Carry out audit and surveillance activities from the annual programme as directed by members of the IPAC

Regularly produce comprehensive reports on findings and recommendations required and forward to relevant personnel.

Report regularly to the IPAC team members on infection prevention issues and on progress with the audit programme.

Participate in the compilation of suitable and appropriate evidence to demonstrate compliance with the Hygiene Code and other national requirements, in collaboration with the IPAC team

Oversee the data gathering and submission to the National UKHSA surgical site surveillance system

Training and Education

Identify own learning needs and ensure own knowledge, and skills are continually updated.

To participate in staff performance development review, and attend mandatory training as required.

Participate in the delivery of an agreed training programme as a result of audit findings.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria

  • NVQ level 3 in Healthcare (equivalent or working towards).
  • A minimum of 3 years experience as a HCA.
  • Experience of undertaking audits.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working as an Infection Control Link practitioner or equivalent within a clinical environment.
  • Experience of speaking to small groups of people
  • Willing to undertake further relevant training as necessary.
  • Practical and intellectual skills
