Substantive Consultant: North with Brighton haemodialysis

Applications are sought for a 10 PA substantive consultant post in renal medicine (with an 8 DCC: 2 SPA split). This consultant job has been created after the retirement of consultant colleagues within the renal department. This job has also been advertised as a fixed term locum position if this is more suitable for the applicant. This job is one of two consultant positions we wish to fill, the other post with a different job description.

They would join the ten full time enthusiastic and committed renal consultants in the department and multi-professional team.

The successful applicant will be based at the Sussex Kidney Unit (SKU) in the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton, which is part of University Hospitals Sussex, and is the teaching hospital associated with Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

The job would involve working in the main hub along with roles in the northern Sussex area of our catchment. The applicant would also jointly manage a cohort of Brighton dialysis unit patients, do renal procedure lists including lines and biopsies and have a specialist interest clinic.

There is no general medical component to this job and the applicant will be involved in the renal on-call rota at the RSCH on a 1:10-11 basis.

The position is to start from April 2022 or soon thereafter.

Main duties of the job

The job will be based at the Sussex Kidney Unit (SKU) in the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton along with roles in the northern Sussex area of our catchment.

The successful applicant will become part of the consultant team doing general nephrology clinics in the north of our catchment area including the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, East Grinstead and Crawley.

When visiting Princess Royal Hospital the applicant will also see any inpatient referrals made to us, as part of our outreach consultant team.

They will be responsible for managing a cohort of patients in the Brighton haemodialysis unit.

The successful applicant will be involved in renal procedures at the RSCH involving native and transplant biopsies and lines. They will also have the opportunity to develop renal clinics in their area of specialist interest.

They may also undertake other roles within the catchment area of the Sussex Kidney Unit

There is no general medical component to this job.

Departmental service development along with junior doctor and medical student supervision and teaching would all be part of the role. Interested applicants could also join our research group.

The applicant will be involved in the renal on-call rota at the RSCH managing renal inpatients on the ward, outliers and referrals from elsewhere in the catchment area of SKU on a 1:10-11 basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work as part of the Sussex Kidney Unit and contribute to the development the unit both within UH Sussex and the wider nephrology community.

The post holder will be one of ten full time renal consultants based at the Sussex Kidney Unit in Brighton with an office there. The successful applicant will work in Brighton and in the northern area of our catchment in Haywards Heath, Crawley and East Grinstead but may also need to travel to do clinics within our whole SKU catchment area.

The successful applicant will form part of the renal consultant team who do outreach general nephrology clinics in Princess Royal Hospital in Hayward Heath, East Grinstead and Crawley seeing new and follow up patients. The standard clinic template would be 8 follow up patients (20 minute slots) and 2 new patients (40 minute slots) in each clinic. Appropriate time is allocated in the job plan for clinic administration and follow up post clinic.

The successful applicant will also form part of the outreach renal consultant team who provide a visiting advice and review service for in-patient renal referrals on the wards in Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.

Many of the referrals to the outreach service have not previously been known to SKU and may have an AKI. Others will be from our dialysis, transplant, immunosuppression or CKD follow up patients who are either admitted with an acute illness or AKI.

These Princess Royal Hospital in-patients are not directly under the in-patient care of the SKU, we are only providing a visiting advice service. They only become our direct responsibility when they are either transferred to the renal ward in Brighton if appropriate, when they are under the on-call ward consultant, or are followed up in our out-patient areas.

We have an agreement to deliver this visiting nephrology advice service weekly and the applicant will work alongside the other consultants from our department who share this workload.

They will be responsible for a cohort for haemodialysis patients within one of the rooms on the main dialysis unit in Brighton, where there are around 210 dialysis patients in total. The post holder will have a cohort of around 60 patients. Time is allocated in the job plan for weekly reviews/ management of patients, formal monthly meetings about every person with a senior nurse and for 2-3 clinic appointments/year/patient. The length of time allocated is dependent upon the number of patient being managed. Administration time is also allocated.

They will be responsible for a native and transplant renal biopsy procedure list or line list at the RSCH which will involve supervising ST3+ trainees in these procedure.

The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to develop renal clinics in their area of specialist interest.

There is the possibility that they may also be involved in clinics and in-reach ward rounds at our other multiple sites and must be willing to travel.

The applicant will be involved in the renal on call rota at the RSCH managing renal inpatients on the ward, outliers and referrals from elsewhere in our catchment area on a 1:10-11 basis. The time required for this has been accurately diary carded and continues to be.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Basic Medical degree
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • CCT in Specialty or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
