UKHO presents an exciting development opportunity for candidates new to Data Engineering who have a real aptitude and interest in developing their technical and wider skills.

About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world’s oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The role

A Junior Data Engineer at the UKHO contributes to data engineering projects and works with the team to design and deliver production quality data pipelines or services. This will include a mix of prioritisation of your own tasks and building of appropriate solutions using technologies such as: distributed computing, serverless architectures, and machine learning.

The data engineering team at the UKHO focus on building data services and productionising analytics. Our data engineers organise as generalists to encourage sharing of projects, knowledge, and technical skills. The team is open and collaborative, working in an agile way to deliver projects. Continuous learning is supported along with sustainable working and a healthy work life balance.

The successful candidate will be given appropriate training, mentoring and support to build their role specific skills by following a defined development plan.  Once assessed as being competent in the role, the post holder will be promoted to B2 (HEO) – we anticipate this will be in the region of 6 to 18 months after starting in the role but will be governed by the successful candidate’s development.
