Plastic Surgery & Burns Department at Royal Preston is seeking a highly motivated, reliable & enthusiastic Health Care Assistant to join our amazing team. The regional Plastic Surgery Centre at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides specialist care & treatment for people across Lancashire and South Cumbria. We deliver Monday to Friday services.

As a key member of the Plastic Surgery & Burns team, you will be expected to deliver high standards of perioperative & patient-focused care within a very busy, progressive & varied department. You will be committed to clinical excellence with effective communication & interpersonal skills. You must have a flexible attitude towards work and a desire for new challenges. You should possess good communication and interpersonal skills and work within multidisciplinary team and on your own. You will be expected to be flexible with working hour that includes working late evenings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our Theatre Senior Healthcare Assistants are required to:

– Input necessary data on the computer

– Assist patients on/off theatre trolleys

– Reassuring patients, who may be anxious about going into the operating theatre

– Set out instruments and equipment ready for surgery

– Make sure the department has stocks of items needed

– Clean and tidy theatre areas after surgery

– Dispose of waste

Theatre HCA need to be:

  • Willing to be in operating theatre areas during surgery
  • Calm and reassuring
  • Health and safety aware
  • Able to follow procedures
  • Part of a team but responsible for their own work
  • You also need to have excellent:

  • Communication skills
  • Good team working skills
  • IT skills
  • Moreover:

    – Provide good quality personalised care in accordance with agreed local and national standards.

    -Present a positive image of self, team and the organisation.

    -Undertake clinical duties relevant to clinical area following achievement of competencies.

    -Assist to maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.

    -Assist in maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.

    -Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.

    -Contribute to maintaining safe, clean, and productive care environment, compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

    -Maintain and develop own competence.

    Qualifications & Education

    Essential criteria

  • GCSE Maths & English grade C or above OR level 2 numeracy skills and level 2 literacy skills
  • NVQ in Health Level 2 or completed internal Level 2 HCA course
  • Must be willing to undertake Trust internal HCA course
  • Desirable criteria

  • Level 3 QCF diploma (Qualification Credit Framework) in healthcare / NVQ level 3
  • Knowledge and Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Previous experience of working in an acute health care or related setting
  • Understanding of health and safety issues within healthcare
  • Understanding of concept and application of confidentiality
  • Understanding of the role of a band 3 senior HCA
  • Desirable criteria

  • Previous hospital experience
