Summary

We are seeking an Assistant Inspector of Ancient Monuments to join Historic England in helping to protect some of the region`s finest archaeological remains and ancient monuments, working positively with owners, applicants and heritage organizations to understand, preserve and celebrate them, and in doing so help shape thriving historic places.

This is a fixed term contract until March .

What you will be doing:

As part of the Midlands Development Advice Team, you will work closely with Inspectors of Historic Monuments to provide Historic England`s advice on proposals for change affecting Scheduled Monuments and registered battlefields.

You will be applying the ethos of `constructive conservation` and making effective use of Conservation Principles in all your advisory work, you will provide advice to owners, local authorities and others, to proactively work towards the sustainable management of the historic environment.

You will also contribute as required to specific projects where your expertise would add value, for example as part of the Historic England Places strategy or in support of Heritage at Risk work.

Please note that the role:

-requires occasional travel to sites not serviced by public transport for which reason a full driving license is required.

-requires visiting/inspecting sites which is likely to require climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined spaces.

-may require occasional attendance at community or planning meetings which are usually held at evenings or weekends.

What we are looking for:

-Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject

-Broad and extensive experience of managing change to ancient monuments and archaeological landscapes, including through the planning system.

-Experience of effective advocacy and working constructively with members of the public

-A good working knowledge of ancient monuments, registered battlefields, and archaeological landscapes in England, and the techniques of their study

-Good knowledge of the conservation, management and presentation of designated heritage assets.

-A general understanding of relevant Government policy, guidance and statutory procedures for the historic environment in the planning system, including Scheduled Monument Consent

-Good oral and written communication skills
