The de la Roche lab is recruiting a Research Laboratory Technician to join the group at the CRUK Cambridge Institute. We are studying the Hedgehog signalling pathway in immune cell development and function.

Working on cells of the innate and adaptive immune system we aim to understand the systemic and local regulatory mechanisms underpinning an effective immune response. We complement our in vivo and in vitro approaches with the analysis of human tissues from our clinical research study at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Our long-term goal is to boost immune functions in patients suffering from cancer, infection and autoimmune disease.

As a Research Laboratory Technician you will accelerate scientific research by supporting research activities in lab. You will prepare and analyse samples as well as supporting the lab manager in ensuring that the laboratory runs smoothly and efficiently. The role holder will assist with equipment maintenance and producing and monitoring inventories of samples and reagents in the lab, ensuring that all reagents are in place by timely ordering and storing as required. The role will be split roughly 80% supporting research tasks and 20% on lab management. The exact type and complexity of the experimental activities performed by the successful candidate will depend on his/her existing laboratory experience. However, we will progressively teach new techniques and we therefore envisage his/her contribution to grow as the candidate acquires more experience in the laboratory.

Key responsibilities

Prepare and analyse samples in support of research activity. Maintain samples and cultures, contribute to the design of research experiments, develop new or improved methods of testing under the supervision of research staff and collate results for interpretation by others.

Perform laboratory methods such as PCR, RNA/DNA/Protein Extraction, Western Blot, mini and maxi Preps, prepare samples for flow cytometry, produce viral stocks.

Assist researchers with animal tissue processing for downstream experiments.

Ensure all laboratory reagents are reconstituted and aliquoted, stored under the right conditions and are easily traceable through the lab inventory database.

Keep detailed records of all experiments performed, ensured all results are appropriately archived.

Support laboratory administration. Monitor consumable stock items and order replacement stock as required. Assist with maintenance of laboratory tidiness and organisation. Maintain stock inventory.

Introduce team members to new processes and procedures. Supporting the lab manager to ensure work in the laboratory is performed in accordance with Risk Assessments and SOPs.

Support lab manager with stock checking, placing simple orders on CUFS when Lab Manager is unavailable. Keep order list/delivery dates updated, tidy away orders when received.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check, a health assessment and a security check.
