Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service

Applications are welcome for the above Fixed Term, Full time (40 hours per week) post based in St Johns Hospital, Livingston.

This post has arisen due to a vacancy and is available from August 2022 for six months. NHS Lothian CAMHS services which are part of the approved training are the 5 Community Based Specialist (Tier 3) services, two that serve the city of Edinburgh (North and South) and the 3 in the broader Lothian region (Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian). In addition to that, training takes place within the NHS Lothian CAMHS well established Paediatric Liaison Team, the Specialist Learning Disability Team and the Outpatient Tier 4 Service. We are fortunate to have within our training scheme the NHS Lothian has the Regional Adolescent Inpatient Unit (IPU). Neurodevelopment assessments are conducted within the Tier 3 services in specialist ADHD teams, Autism Assessment Hubs or within the generic teams.

NHS Lothian CAMHS is part of the South East of Scotland training scheme, which has joined up with the rest of Scotland to become a very successful national training scheme for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry coordinated by the North of Scotland School of Psychiatry in Aberdeen.

Higher Trainees for NHS Lothian are expected to join their colleagues from the South East Region for the Local Academic Program and their colleagues from the rest of Scotland for the National Academic Program.

Higher Trainees are expected to be on call out of hours 1:7 and the on call is non residential.

Main duties:
Maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice

Undertaking Clinical Assessments of children and young people with mental health problems across the age range

Assessing and managing the main clinical diagnoses for children and adolescents

Assessing and managing psychiatric emergencies for children and adolescents

Recognising the need for pharmaceutical treatment, being able to explain risks and benefits and able to prescribe safely under supervision.

Being able to assess suitability of children, young people and their families for psychological therapy

Work to become highly skilled in safeguarding children using the current legal frameworks.

This post has deanery approval for training and the successful applicant will receive training opportunities at the appropriate level based on previous experience.

There may be a possibility to extend this appointment to the end of the training year. The extension may be at any of the hospitals on the rotation.
