Due to promotions within our team, we have an exciting opening for a full time Band 6 Specialist Bariatric Dietitian. This is a 9 months fixed term position for COVID-19 recovery.

This opportunity will involve working within the highly regarded multidisciplinary bariatric surgery team. It comprises of surgeons, physicians, nurses, chemical pathologist, clinical psychologists, physiotherapists and clinical co-ordinators. We provide tier 4 bariatric surgery service to patients across east London and the east of England.

 The successful candidate will be required to effectively communicate both verbally and in written form with a wide range of patients, colleagues and external partners. You will possess a range of skills to assess, motivate and develop patient centred goals to facilitate engagement with treatment plans.

The post involves working mainly in the outpatient clinic and group setting. Clinics include; pre-operative assessment, preparing for surgery and post-operative follow-up. Group sessions include pre and post-surgery education. You will be expected to have excellent time management, organisational and IT skills to aid timely and accurate completion of the associated administration. You will be expected to work with patients both in person and remotely. You will be expected to actively contribute to service development projects, audits and CPD club. 

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide specialist dietetic input for patients pre- and post- bariatric surgery, managing a specialised clinical caseload and carry out complicated assessment, diagnosis, management and treatment of patients within this specialty.
  • Undertake structured outpatient assessment, preparing for surgery and follow up clinics for patients referred to the Bariatric Surgery Service.
  • Update a range of databases with patient information.
  • Deliver on group education sessions for patients before and after bariatric surgery including facilitation of patient support groups.
  • Liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure high standards of care including attending and contributing to bariatric multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Provide telephone and email support for patients before and after bariatric surgery.
  • Undertake inpatient assessment and provide specialist dietetic input for bariatric inpatients including calculating and arranging enteral and parental feeding regimes as required (completion of associated in-house competency based training).
  • Develop evidence based patient information, clinical policies and guidelines and contribute to service developments and audits in the area of obesity and bariatric surgery.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate teaching programmes for patients, nurses and other health care professionals in the hospital and community staff as required by the service.

    Education

    Essential criteria

  • Degree or Postgraduate qualification in dietetics (or equivalent)
  • HCPC registered Dietitian
  • Desirable criteria

  • Advanced study in relevant field, for example Behaviour Change Training
  • Member of the British Dietetic Association
  • Member of BOMSS
  • Masters in Leadership or management
  • Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Postgraduate clinical dietetic experience of working with adult patients with obesity and in bariatrics
  • Experience of working in outpatient / clinic
  • Experience of presenting and group working with adult patients, carers and staff.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Experience of line management
  • Knowledge

    Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of bariatric surgery options and their impact on dietetic advice.
  • Knowledge of the role of the bariatric Dietitian in assessment, preoperatively and postoperatively
  • Knowledge of NICE and BOMSS guidelines for Obesity and Bariatric surgery and their relevance to dietetic practice.
  • Knowledge of general dietetics and obesity management
  • HCPC professional code of conduct and adherence to these
  • Desirable criteria

  • Dietetic needs of patients from different ethnic and religious backgrounds.
