Theatres Operating Department Orderly

Band 2 – 37.5

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their care skill set and really make a difference.

To undertake messenger/porters duties between the theatres, wards and other departments. To offer support to the members of the multi-disciplinary operating department / endoscopy team.

Main duties of the job

SECTION 1- MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES :

To assist the nursing and medical staff in the perioperative care of the patient.

To assist the theatre/endoscopy and ward nursing staff in the safe transfer of the patient between areas.

To assist in the smooth running of the operating theatre/endoscopy rooms, under the direction of the nursing staff.

To assist in Maternity theatres.

PROFESSIONAL/CLINICAL

Participate in the trial of new equipment. Complete evaluation forms as requested.

Attend Departmental meetings as requested.

Ensure effective and comprehensive communication with patients, staff and relatives.

Assist in the training and orientation of new staff.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    ADMINISTRATIVE / MANAGERIAL

    To maintain appropriate stock levels and report any ordering requirements to the nurse in charge.

    To provide cover for colleagues as directed by the line manager.

    To care for the patients clothing and valuables in accordance with Trust policy.

    SECTION 2- KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    To assist in the documentation of care delivered in the operating theatres supervised and directed by the nurse in charge.

    To undertake and complete appropriate training relating to the role of operating department orderly.

    To complete training in line with the Trusts mandatory training requirements. To ensure that updates are attended as required by the Trusts training policy.

    Assists in the application of plaster as directed, and under the observation of the medical team.

    SECTION 3- EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT

    Participate in the safe transfer of patients at the discretion and direction of the nurse in charge. Transfer patients from ward to theatre and vice versa, using correct moving aids.

    Clean, care for and set up the equipment for use in the operating theatre.

    Position and prepare patients on the operating table or trolley as instructed by the nurse/surgeon/anaesthetist as appropriate.

    Assist other members of the team in the preparation and cleaning of the operating theatre/procedure room.

    Prepare patient trolleys.

    Monitor the performance of equipment during surgery.

    Report any malfunction of equipment to the nurse in charge.

    Assist in the preparation of specimens for pathological examination e.g. labelling and dispatch in accordance with the Trust and local specimen policy.

    Assist in the application of plaster as directed and under direct observation of the medical

    To provide assistance as a circulating member of the team.

    Maintain good housekeeping under the direction of the nurse in charge.

    Direct exposure to terminations, amputations, trauma cases.

    Direct exposure to bodily fluids on a daily basis

    Qualifications

    Desirable criteria

  • NVQ Level 2 in Healthcare or equivalent qualification
  • Relevant health care experience
  • Experience, skills and knowledge
